In order to understand the benefits for elevators, it is important to know the old stick-built process. A hoistway is constructed on the jobsite. Cold, heat and working in the elements causes irregularities, heaving and settling. There are no perfect site-built hoistways. Once finished it sits throughout the build. Once electricity is on the elevator technicians shows up when they want and start assembling the components of the elevator in the crowded hoistway. It is cramped and dangerous. Months go by.
The difference with modular. First, the hoistway is completed always plumb and straight due to factory tolerances. Cranes are used to move and place the heavy components that are welded into place – no lifting. They are wrapped in mold resistant drywall for the appropriate fire- rating. Simultaneously the elevator car is built to specifications. When both are completed the car is inserted into the hoistway. Wiring is done and it is shipped to the job site. It is placed in a hours. Faster, safer, greener and higher-quality.
Modular takes the elevator off the critical path, driving down construction costs saving time, money and the headache of dealing with another trades on an already busy build schedule.
